- Quest for Good Wiccan/Pagan Children’s Books
Sep 12 2011I was looking for books for Wiccan and Pagan kids for our children. It’s one thing to learn about something from one’s parents, but reading about it from others can help reinforce what is being taught. I haven’t looked to see what books are out there in a while, so I didn’t quite know what [...]
- Twists and Turns, Downs and Ups
Jul 11 2011It has been quite a long and unexpected hiatus since I last published an article, but I have not forgotten you, dear reader. For my family, it has been a time of darkness and light, but most of all a time of growth. As some of you may have noticed, we moved away from the [...]
- What Schools Really Teach: The Paralyzing Fear of Failure
Dec 18 2010I recently finished reading John Taylor Gatto’s book, The Underground History of American Education, and came to an amazing realization that affects me and nearly everyone else I know. Though he doesn’t say it directly in his book, I learned that the fear of failure in our society is taught in our schools. This is [...]
- Children’s Ostara Ritual
Apr 05 2009Though it’s been a couple weeks since Ostara, I wanted to talk about how our family celebrated. I got a great idea about doing Ostara Eggs from Patrick McCleary’s blog, Pagan Dad. Ostara Eggs We colored the eggs with frozen blueberries, paprika, frozen spinach and grape juice concentrate. We didn’t strain the colorants, as some [...]
- Arrival of the Rose
Jan 31 2009On Monday, January 26, 2009 at 9:06 pm Pacific Time, the Rose arrived. She weighed 9 lbs. 10 oz. and measured in at 21.75 inches long. She was our second water birth and our third homebirth. The labor was one of the most difficult of all our children, as she was born asynclitic and occiput [...]
- On Parenthood
Jun 22 2008Previously, I had written about fatherhood and my wife, Lady Bella, wrote about motherhood. What remains is how to combine the two, which is necessary since “the masculine and the feminine dwell within all souls” (The Universal Doctrine). Raising children, whether they be biological or astral, requires that one be a parent, not just a [...]
- On Motherhood
May 11 2008My wife, Rev. Lady Bella Sundancer, wrote a deep, insightful guest post for Hawk’s Cry on motherhood as a counterpart to my previous post On Fatherhood. Consider it her Mother’s Day present to Pagan families. I trust you will find it as enlightening as I have. My three children test me in ways I never [...]
- On Fatherhood
Apr 27 2008I am a father of three. As such, I struggle with the role I play in their lives and our relationship. Our society today does not understand the father. The “ideal” father today is sensitive and encouraging, we are told. He is not punishing or demanding, as fathers were portrayed prior to the 1960s. The [...]
- Poop Mural and the Gods Said “HONK!”
Apr 15 2008Our children offer us the most interesting perspectives on spirituality. The Diva and the Warrior gave us such insights lately that my wife, Bella, and I had to stop and think. Poop Mural Our five-year-old Diva has complained at various times about monsters in her bedroom closet, which we believe. There is a negative energy [...]
- Healing Children
Mar 30 2008Our son, the Warrior, injured himself when he was seventeen months old. He reached up to a kitchen counter and pulled a cup of hot tea onto himself, causing second-degree burns. It caused a great deal of trauma. The burn itself, the ride in the ambulance to the hospital, the hospital treatment, and the constant changing of bandages when he got home. Since he was a young child, he had to endure the stress of the Child “Protection” Service interrogations with all of us as well, even though they found no abuse occurred. It was a significant event that changed him on many levels.
